Afrobeat star Femi Kuti has opened up about his complicated childhood with his legendary father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, revealing that despite growing up in the heart of Kalakuta Republic, he received no direct guidance from the music icon.
Speaking during a candid interview, Femi explained that his father’s chaotic lifestyle, constant battles with the government, and the ever-busy nature of leading a global musical movement left little room for parenting.
“People assume Fela trained me musically or taught me everything I know. But the truth is, he never taught me anything not music, not life lessons,” he said.
Femi added that his growth came from observation, not instruction.
“I learned by watching. I saw the struggles, the strength, the resistance. That became my education.”
Despite this, the Grammy-nominated musician maintains deep respect for his father’s legacy and admits that Fela’s influence shaped the man he has become.
